Jon Katz defended me on a dui case. He was informative and responsive through out the whole process. He got the ball rolling on what I needed to be doing before the court date and kept me informed the entire time. He was confident and very knowledgable about everything. The best part, he got my dui dropped to a wreck less driving! I was ecstatic! Still am. I might add, my case seemed almost impossible to not get convicted of a dui. Best lawyer ever! I will be recommending him to everyone!

Jon got a good result on a DUI/refusal to blow trial involving a collision -- after examining the arresting officer, the prosecutor accepted our offer of pleading down to reckless and refusal. This is apparently very rare in DUIs involving a collision. The prosecutors are generally unwilling to give such a deal in such cases. I attribute this result to Jon's talent and preparation.
Jon was generally responsive to emails and calls within a day, and his staff are on point. His demeanor and experience calmed me and inspired confidence in his abilities, and I speak on this point as a fellow lawyer. His courtroom demeanor set him apart from other attorneys. I probably saw four other attorneys argue DUIs on my court date, and Jon made each of them seem amateurish and unprepared. I recommend Jon without reservation, and had an overwhelmingly positive experience in his representation of me.
I had an urgent legal matter and contacted Mr. Katz for advice. He was prompt in setting a no fee initial consultation. He displayed a high level of knowledge of the areas of law that affect my case and provided advice for pretrial activity on my part that was sound. In the end I did not choose to go with Mr. Katz, but this was a function more that I have a relationship with another law firm that handled a case for me in the past very successfully than any negatives feelings towards Mr. Katz. As this other firm was able and willing to attend to my legal situation I have chosen them. Check this guy out if you need a lawyer!

I was convicted of a DWI after retaining the services of a local attorney (not Katz) near the area where I was charged. This lawyer was horrible, and did not work with any effort on my case for me to have an adequate and fair defense. So now my only options were to accept this conviction that would tarnish my professional record and limit my career opportunities or appeal this conviction.
I am glad I chose the latter option, and looked for a lawyer that would give me my best chance of reducing this conviction. I knew this was an uphill battle because I heard the appeals judge was even tougher on DWI charges.
I searched the internet for the best lawyer in the DC area, and came across this website. I saw Katz had a perfect rating, had amazing reviews (seemed a little too good to be true, but they were.) So, I called him and could tell from the start he means absolute business, does not give any BS. After consulting with many other lawyers, I felt Katz was my best option. It was.
On the day of the hearing, Katz was already talking with local lawyers to get some inside information. He was working, reading, talking with me the whole time prior to the hearing. Then the hearing starts, he goes up to the judge and talks with him...a few minutes later my charge is dropped from DWI to reckless. I was willing to accept harsher penalties to get this DWI off my record, which might have helped. But I remember the prosecution was shocked, and very caught off guard that this just happened so quickly. Overall, I am glad I found Katz, and got the best results I could ask for given my situation.

I had the unfortunate experience of running afoul of the Virginia law authorities a little while back. Though the charge was "only" a misdemeanor criminal charge it held out the prospect of destroying my life and my career. The police were less than ethical in questioning so I basically dug myself into a big black hole. The whole system is a little on the inhumane side if you ask me.
Jon ended up being the only light at the end of what felt like a very dark tunnel. In the end my charge was reduced which I felt was a favorable outcome given the circumstances at the time.
I had discussed my case with several attorneys before seeing Jon. They appeared to offer no hope; it seemed they were only interested in getting money to file an appeal and they were not interested in fighting for my rights. Jon was a little difficult to get hold of at first and I was a little apprehensive about his "quirks" as mentioned in one AVVO rating.
However, after spending only fifteen minutes with Jon I knew that this was the guy I wanted to have on my side. I left his office feeling whole and human again and I knew my rights were going to be protected.
He immediately recommended a defense strategy and we discussed an action plan I could implement while waiting for my court date that would improve my chances. I was not only impressed with his legal acumen and supreme confidence; more than anything it was his humanity. He listened to me an I felt like he cared about me and my case. He offered to fight hard all the way up to and on my court date.
He didn't pull any punches, he pointed out the pros and cons but when I left his office I was "whole" again. He was a bit "quirky" but that turned out to one his strengths and went with his disarming sense of humor. I would be worried sick about a court delay or some other fact of my case and he would effortlessly manage to lift my spirits, literally.
Jon always returned phone calls promptly and as long as you scheduled a half hour meeting in advance he would make himself available to you.
If you were like me when you first visited AVVO I know how you must be feeling!!! Do not fear, there is someone who will fight this crazy system they call justice. That someone is Jon Katz.
Jon Katz is a freedom fighter and it's your freedom he's fighting for!

The day Jon and I met, he told me, "I'll fight for you every step of the way." He absolutely lived up to his promise. Jon was very proactive from day one, and kept me informed of every action he took via prompt email. He laid out a plan of action for my defense, including things I could do to help my case before we even went to court. When we received a plea offer in the days leading up to my court date, he carefully explained to me the pros and cons of accepting such a deal. When my day in court arrived, he was in constant contact with the prosecutor prior to my case being called, and his extensive knowledge of the evidence in my favor over the course of this bargaining process resulted in a plea deal that gave us a better outcome than we expected to be possible short of going to trial and winning. That being said, Jon also made sure that I was aware that he would have gladly gone to trial had I requested that we push forward. In the end, Jon did everything I could have asked.

Mr. Katz is truly the Best Attorney I ever had and I had several throughout my years. In My case I was charged with a 2nd DWI within 3 years and facing a very lengthy jail term. Mr. worked his Magic and got a miracle outcome. I Highly Recommend Hiring Mr. Katz for Criminal Defense especially for DWI.
Thank You so much Mr. Katz!!!

Jon was a great attorney! Very knowledgeable of DWI law in Virginia and very straight forward about the process. The end result in my DWI case was definitely better than I expected. Jon suggested that I use a fact witness to add truth to my argument and it worked out wonderfully. I was eventually found not guilty for the DWI offense, but due to the fact that I refused the breathalyzer test my license was suspended for a year. A small price to pay in my opinion. I can deal with a civil offense.

I presume you are reading this because you are charged with something and that you are looking for "the lawyer" who can do the best for you. Please keep reading. You will learn from my story as I was here on this site reading the reviews to pick "the best lawyer" not too long ago. I am a permanent resident of the US and I have a good background/education with a good job. I was charged with a misdemeanor theft, which jeopardized my future, specifically my US citizenship, the idea of starting a family (I was planning to bring my fiancé from overseas after becoming a citizen), and my career (obtaining a security clearance). So, I had to find the best lawyer to get me out of this trouble.
While I was beating up myself for being in this position, I immediately started looking for the lawyer. In the meantime, I received a number of letters from lawyers to my address advising me to hire them. They must have checked the police records to figure out that I needed a lawyer. Among those, I picked one. Additionally, I picked 3 other lawyers on this site based on the reviews and their ratings. So, I had total of 4 lawyers to meet with. I started seeing them one by one. The first lawyer I met had a limited experience. She said no matter what she would do I would be found guilty and that the only way that would give me a better chance would be during the appeal. So, she basically asked me to pay her so that she would escort me to the court until the appeal. The other lawyer was a former prosecutor. He said he wouldn't be able to do anything to save me and that the prosecutors would never be convinced to amend the charge even if I did hundreds of hours of voluntary community service. I was hopeless and sleepless for days. I had to find that lawyer that would give me relief from this pain. The last lawyer I saw before I met Jon had 30 years of experience who practiced not only criminal law but also immigration law. This sounded very convenient as I would need both. He told me some of the similar cases he dealt with. I was about to hire him. I went ahead and asked him a few questions about my immigration status and its potential impact by this charge. Based on his answers, I figured that he didn't know some of the key facts (admitting arrests on form N-445) on immigration law. So, I gave up on him.
Jon was the last lawyer I met with. As soon as I explained him the situation, he wrote me the prescription. Not to reveal his magic, I will briefly mention. The prescription included a voluntary community service, psychological evaluation, and letters from the immigration and security clearance lawyers for the potential ramifications in case I would be found guilty. These all would help Jon convince the prosecutor to amend the charge if not totally drop it. One of the best things of hiring Jon is that he already has the contacts to make them available for you. We were able to obtain all the letters along with the psychological evaluation. I know psychological evaluation sounds scary. However, the psychologist Jon referred me to was such a great person, he made it all very easy. I also did over 100 hours of voluntary community service.
During the court day, Jon was alert and totally in control. He went ahead and talked to the prosecutor even before the witness showed up. He convinced the prosecutor not to prosecute! What a life changing moment. Thank you Jon! Thank you the "Dream Team", the psychologist, the immigration and the security clearance lawyers, and Jon's great staff!
So, after all, my advice to those who are looking for the best lawyer: Hire Jon if you want your lawyer to fight for you till the very end. I have no doubt he will do the best for you. With all due respect, my advice to other lawyers with limited abilities: Go intern with Jon in his office. It doesn't matter for how long you have been practicing. I promise you will learn a lot from him!

My experience with Jon and his staff was wonderful. I highly recommend him for anyone who requires legal representation. From our very first meeting, I was blown away by his vast knowledge of and his experience with criminal law. What impressed me even more was his matter-of-fact way of communicating. In my limited experience with lawyers, I have found that good lawyers can sometimes be a bit pretentious. But Jon was neither pretentious nor was he just good. He was personable and he was the BEST!
At first I was certain that I would be charged, found guilty, and quite possibly be going to jail for my felony gun charge. But Jon worked with me, the judge, the prosecutor and the arresting officer and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my case’s outcome. Jon Katz is THE ONLY criminal defense lawyer you want representing you if you are in the greater DC area. I was once on this site looking for a lawyer too and if you are lucky enough to be reading this post, then look no further because John Katz is most certainly head and shoulders above the rest.
Thanks Jon, You really KFA!!!
