About Me

I am the founder of a five-lawyer law firm, Warnken, LLC. We have a concentration in appellate litigation. We also practice in the areas of sophisticated criminal litigation, law enforcement, personal injury, and workers’ compensation. In addition, we handle general litigation support for other attorneys, both civil and criminal.

I have also been a full-time law professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law for 35 years, teaching primarily Criminal Law and Constitutional Criminal Procedure. As the former Director of UofB’s Judicial Internship Program, I placed more than 3,000 students with judges. In 2013, my 1,200-page treatise on Maryland Criminal Law & Procedure will be published.

As an appellate litigator, I have been involved in 250 appeals. I was honored to have argued against Attorney General Janet Reno in her only Supreme Court appearance. I have been privileged to testify before Congress. I have served as an expert in legislative and judicial arenas on more than 50 occasions. I have been legal correspondent for four of Baltimore’s local television stations, and I have done more than 1,500 media appearances and interviews. I have been fortunate enough to present more than 500 lectures in 18 states.

I continue to wake up every day eager to both mentor the future lawyers of Maryland and serve my clients. I have had a remarkable career because of three things: hard work, dedication, and luck. I was fortunate enough to have been at the right place at the right time, a lot. I wish you the same good fortune.

Professor Warnken is one of the greatest legal minds in Maryland today. Period. He's forgotten more law than most people know. To say he's written the book on criminal procedure would actually be an accurate statement because he has. It is an honor to have been a former student of Professor Warnken's and it should be for any client to have such a strong advocate in their corner.

Professional Misconduct

This lawyer was disciplined by a state licensing authority.

  1. Reprimand
    issued in MD, 2011

Reprimand means the attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State warns the lawyer in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior. Details of the infraction are made part of the public record.

Byron’s comment: “Both the 2011 and 2009 reprimands came from having an employee who stole money and hid client communications. When I was asked for a response from the Attorney Grievance Commission, the employee hid the correspondence. The employee has long since been terminated. No clients were harmed financially. I take full responsibility, as I must answer for my staff at all times. Sadly, before he was my employee, he was a long-time friend. That's obviously gone as well.”

  2. Reprimand
    issued in MD, 2009

Reprimand means the attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State warns the lawyer in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior. Details of the infraction are made part of the public record.

Byron’s comment: “Please see explanation above.”
