Marc and the team at the DC Tenants' Rights Center are great folks to turn to when dealing with tenant/landlord disputes. I'd recommend Marc and the team for services ranging from minor issues to more serious cases. I also appreciate what Marc's team is doing as far as community outreach including free workshops on tenants' rights! Highly recommend what they're doing for tenants in the district.
Mr. Borbely was fantastic! Couldn't have asked for a better attorney in the allotted time frame and budget. He helped us organize our case and supported us, without being overbearing, when we needed him. I would highly recommend Mr. Borbely to anyone with with tenant rights issues.
Marc was recommended to us by a family friend who is a lawyer, he had never met Marc but had heard that he was a fair and honest lawyer helping people wit tenant disputes - even among lawyers Marc's reputation precedes him.
We were being sued by a a real piece-of-work landlord; the kind of guy who has multiple suits in court at once - suing vulnerable people is how he makes his money. We had been preparing our case - constructive eviction - and he filed his suit first. With this now being a suit and counter suit case we knew we were in over our heads. That's when we turned to Marc.
Marc sat down with us, helped us organize our materials and timeline, helped get our court filings in order and did absolutely everything behind these scenes to help us prepare for representing ourselves in pre-trial with the Judge. Marc was also going to be our representative if we had gone to trial, however Marc managed negotiations with the Landlord and he settled, the landlord gave us exactly what we were hoping to get,
What I think is most important to mention about working with Marc is how empowered my roommates and I felt in working with him. Knowing that we were tight on cash, but willing to learn to advocate for ourselves Marc gave us three options at each stage of the process - he would explain very thoroughly the next steps and then ask if we felt we could do it ourselves, if we wanted to work with him to do it, or if we wanted him to do it - each of these correlating to a different cost. It was amazing to be able to feel a sense of control in a process that is very overwhelming and intimidating. I learned so much with Marc as our advocate. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
I was renting a property that was not built to code and was rent controlled and the greedy unscrupulous landlord kept raising the rent to harass all the tenants, forcing them out. .The living conditions were horrible the maintenance company really did very little of the maintenance. The roof leaked, I had mice, serious fire code and safety issues, , and multiple other maintenance problems, the wiring in the house was in adequate and not to code, a friend was helping me move and was charging her cell phone, went to unplug it, and the outlet sparked so hard it melted the prongs of the cell phone charger! The DC government inspectors turned a blind eye to the fact that it was not built to code, because the landlord had made cosmetic changes! Marc was able to get me a good settlement which enabled me to comfortably move out. Marc's knowledge of DC laws proved that the property was rent controlled and that the landlord did not even have a building permit! I could not have won my case without Marc.
Marc assisted me with a challenging landlord-tenant issue, securing the best possible resolution for me. Further, his rates were reasonable, and Marc and his team treated me with utmost respect and kindness. He is the kind of lawyer you want on your side.
We had a few questions regarding our legal rights, and just needed to know how the law would interpret our rights. Marc was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and provided us a prompt appointment time. He was very helpful, answered all of the questions we had, was available for further questions after our meeting, and was very professional. We thought it was a great alternative to the astronomical retainer fees others charge just to ask questions. Would highly recommend his services!
I had a flea infestation that lasted over 2 months, and the landlord slowly responded to treatments despite the place being unlivable. Marc Borbely thoroughly researched the management company and owner's track record responding to the cases. He was highly knowledgable about tenants rights and successfully negotiated a settlement based on my priorities. I am a public school teacher with an inflexible work schedule, yet Marc accommodated and quickly communicated when I was able to respond. I give him my highest recommendation for his extensive knowledge of the DC's tenants rights and ability to negotiate and find a solution based on client needs.
I hired Marc to handle a dispute with my landlord. Marc is extremely knowledgeable about landlord/tenant law and provided excellent guidance during the process. Marc was able to negotiate a settlement in our favor before we stepped a foot in a courtroom. I would highly recommend Marc to anyone looking for help in fighting unscrupulous landlords. He didn't waste our time and resources, and provided us with the most efficient outcome. You can trust Marc to provide quality legal guidance and representation.
As a foreigner dealing with another country's laws, one is always in a disadvantage. So I found Mr Borbely through Avvo and I'm glad to say it was a great experience. I had a couple of issues with my landlord and Mr Borbely helped me understand my rights, my options and the costs and benefits of following them. We scheduled a meeting very fast, he answered me very fast on all occasions, so I was very happy with his service. I have no problems recommending him to future clients.
Awful experience! Just give 1 fact of many: Mr. Borbely used wrong form to file motion AND sent to wrong address. So the motion have to be refilled and the hearing date have to be reset. Then Mr. Borbely insisted to push date further because he said he had a doctor appointment. According Mr. Borbely instruction at hearing date what he gave to us, we take day off from work for the hearing, but after hours waiting and found out from Judge that Mr. Borbely didn’t confirmed the hearing date. All our time were wasted. After several “mistakes” and thousands dollars, we fired him.
