Stephen joined Young/Sommer LLC in March, 2011 acting of counsel. He has previously worked in the areas of civil litigation practice, specifically in the areas of medical malpractice defense, product liability, municipal defense, and insurance law. Since 1988, Stephen has concentrated his practice on matrimonial and family law, which includes divorce, separation and annulment; child custody and access, parental and grandparental rights; prenuptial agreements, post-nuptial agreements, separation agreements, marital settlement agreements and cohabitation agreements; equitable distribution of property; spousal maintenance and alimony; child support; paternity; mediation; and Collaborative Law handling of family matters. He has also represented health care facilities and families in obtaining guardians for incapacitated individuals.
Whether in court or through negotiation, Stephen advocates for his clients in a professional and zealous manner, and at the same time is sensitive to the variety of emotions necessarily associated with matrimonial and family issues. In addition to the emotional impact of this type of work, these areas of law can also be a financial drain. Stephen and his associate Lauren Hunt, work together to address these factors; combined they have many years of experience and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Stephen volunteers his time on pro bono cases on behalf of The Legal Project and the Legal Aid Society, and as requested by the courts. He also serves as an honorary board member of The Legal Project, established by the Capital District Women’s Bar Association to provide free legal services to the working poor. He has been a contributing author to Lexis-Nexis publications. He has also lectured on family law for the New York State Bar Association.
