Thank you for the reply. My concern is that if I call the collection agency and offer to negotiate a debt, and they refuse, they may use this as evidence against me in court, proving that I do in fact owe money. Can you see this happening?

That is a valid concern. If you want more information, just ask them for it. If they served you, look through the documents and see what they plan to use against you. When you call you don't have to say whether or not you think you owe it, even if they ask you... Just tell them you want more information because you aren't sure how they arrived at the amount.

Do you owe what they allege? Do you owe a portion of it? Why? Does the contract allow them to sue you for late fees/attnys fees/court costs? Most likely, see if its calculated properly.
