Competent lawyers file responses to UD complaints every working day. If you can not afford a lawyer, you may qualify for a free attorney through a public service law firm such as Legal Aid, Public Counsel or Bet Tzek for instance. Hire an attorney. Some, at least in the Los Angeles area will represent you for very low cost ( i.e. BASTA) and may also handle your illegal rent case. Further, if the unit is in the City of Los Angeles you may have other rights which an attorney would recognize.

Lol funny Lawyer. Yes I understand why you went to law school :) unfortunately the timing on a situation like this is too short to wait around and find appropriate rep nor is it attainable for those without the ability to pay 200$ an hour. An answer must be files so quickly I don't even now if a lawyer has time to file all this. Which I can only assume is purposeful to make a defendant give up and therefore lose. You have the right to defend yourself but the language and rules and knowledge required to so so a far beyond what the average person can handle. Also not every lawyer is as brilliant as the few so kindly answering questions in this forum. I will have more time when I sue for all re rents I've paid for more than four years on an illegal apartment!^_^*
