Thank you for the answer. Any idea on how I can look this up further?
Also, since it's not a lot of money (a few hundred a year), is it likely that I have to talk to someone about it?

No, employment is simply not defined in the Immigration and Nationality Act. But the normal, non-legal meaning is that you are working for someone, or for yourself, for pay.
