You should definitely appear in court, otherwise a judgement will be entered against you. However check your state's debtor exemption laws, example "ILLINOIS DEBTOR EXEMPTIONS". This will advise on your qualified exemptions and should be filed with your court clerk. At least, this should protect your assets from being seized, and qualified income from being garnished by writ of execution.
