I am in 100% agreement with James regarding the need to use a good software company for tax calculation purposes. Particularly for any company selling into multiple jurisdictions, as would most any Internet-based business. With one caveat, which is that the adage "Garbage in. Garbage out" is very apropos when it comes to using any technology and expecting the technology to do all the work. This includes sales tax software, which is only as good as the taxability determinations and mapping of those determinations to the software. If you call a moose an elk and expect the software to tax it as a moose, the software won't correct the human input error.

Which is one of the reasons our firm is aligned with a sales tax technology firm and tax consulting firm, to bring professional services and expertise together with technology to provide a solution to clients seeking to implement a considered, comprehensive and reliable tax and regulatory compliance solution.
