Yes, but the specialization system helps consumers have some probabilistic chance of locating (and thus be able to statistically ascertain regarding) an attorney who will do a good job. I am on the California Board of Legal Specialization (CBLS) board and am working hard to help California expand it.
You show your very good mastery of criminal law here on avvo. I enjoy reading and learn a great deal from your answers (and I also appreciate some of the short brusque answers - entertainment wise as I learn from you).
But the average person having an immediate need will be unable to take the time to appreciate the level of you knowledge as other atttorneys on avvo get to do. That's why you would make an excellent addition to the CBLS criminal specialists if you'd care to join. Based upon the answers you give here, I'd be proud to recommend you to CBLS and to recommend CBLS to you. Next exam is fall 2013 and I'd be pleased to see your name on the CBLS roster of criminal specialists in future.

But both counties are crawling with attorneys who do not pay the state bar a higher fee to get listed and stay listed as a specialist. Most of CA's great lawyers consider the listing an irrelevance.
