A properly setup trust may very well protect that trust from equitable distribution. However, the trust may be improper, or she may have commingled the funds with her marital assets which could expose it.

Final issue to consider is that if you have children usually a trust is not protected from Child Support. (Alimony yes / Child Support No).

I did not mean to suggest that the trust would be protected from child support. Actually, I meant the opposite...that the assets in the trust COULD be considered as a factor in terms of child support. In Michigan, the court does not always factor that in. But they have the ability to do so.
