This makes no sense to me. ^
I talked to the police when they came to arrest him. Why should he not talk to me? Can't I talk to the D.A and ask to drop the charges?

Well, whether it makes sense to you or not it is sound advise that you should follow. You can talk to him, but just don't talk about that incident. You can be called as a witness and they can ask about your communications with him about what happened. No you cannot talk to the DA to drop the charges. I mean, you could, but you would not do your boyfriend or yourself any favors by doing that, at least not without an attorney representing you. Again, do NOT talk to law enforcement about what happened, lawyer up!

We can't afford an attorney. I was told to contact the district attorney and let them know I'm not pressing charges an that he's innocent and it's a big misunderstanding. Will he be doing jail time? He has no past record this is his first dv offense.

I don't know if he will do jail time, it depends. Who told you to talk to the DA, an attorney? I don't think so.
