In the 1790’s, Congressman Matthew Lyon or “Spitting Lyon, the Wild Irishman from Vermont,” was re-elected to Congress while in jail. He was sentenced for making defamatory remarks about the president John Adams. Lyon violated the Sedition Act, which made criticizing the president illegal, a law that was in effect until 1801.
