The history of Dallas Love Field airport is rockier than its name suggests. In 1964, city officials decided to shift operations at Love Field to the planned Dallas-Fort Worth International. DFW opened in 1973, but Southwest Airlines refused to move. Southwest had begun operations at Love Field in 1971, and argued that they never agreed to move.
The Supreme Court agreed, ruling that Southwest could do business at Love Field as long as it remained an airport. Congress, however, soon passed the Wright Amendment, a law that restricted passenger traffic out of Love Field. The law was conditionally repealed in 2006, and all restrictions on Love Field expire in October 2014.
