Columbia's first waterworks were built by Abram Blanding, a man of many talents who was also the town's first schoolteacher and attorney.

The city purchased the waterworks for a third of Blanding's investment in 1835, and later named a street in his honor.

The system used a steam engine to pump water to a wooden tank, which was then carried throughout the city via cast iron and lead pipes.
