The town of Cranston was formed in 1754 from unincorporated settlements along the Pawtuxet River. Cranston remained a town for over 150 years, until it was officially incorporated as a city in 1910.

Despite becoming a city in 1910, Cranston retains much of its rural seacoast atmosphere, and lacks a single urban center. A wealth of historical buildings remain in Cranston as a result, including 16 National Historic Places.
