Salem has served as the capital of Oregon for over a century. However, the issue wasn't always so clear. The early days of Oregon were marked by a furious struggle over which city would serve as Oregon's capital.

In 1851, the capital was moved from Oregon City to Salem. In 1855, it was then moved from Salem to Corvallis, only to be moved back to Salem later that same year.
