In 1776, Staten Island was the site of a failed peace conference between the United States and the British Empire.

Lord Richard Howe and General William Howe met with a U.S. delegation consisting of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward Rutledge in an attempt to end the American Revolutionary War.

However, the British delegation's insistence that the U.S. withdraw the Declaration of Independence was something the U.S. delegation refused to accept. The meeting ended without an agreement after only three hours.
