Jamaica is a borough of Queens in New York City. A name comes from the Jameco tribe of Indians who lived there before a charter for the town was granted in 1650.

In the early days, settlement began around a pond full of beavers, and their pelts were the colony’s main moneymaker. The population grew as people from neighboring counties came to get what was promised to each man, a house lot, a plantation for farming, a wood lot to get firewood, and a meadow lot for hay for the barn animals.

The key to Jamaica’s rapid growth that still continues is the focus on good roads and effective transportation. Trolley cars took the place of horses and buggies and allowed workers to get to their jobs quickly.
