In 1940, two people living in Nevada received divorces from their respective spouses and then married each other. Upon returning to their native North Carolina, they were charged with “bigamous cohabitation,” as North Carolina did not recognize their divorces. This eventually resulted in a United States Supreme Court ruling (in “Williams v. North Carolina”) that states must recognize divorces performed in other states.
