The fortunes of Newark rose when American inventor Seth Boyden moved there from Foxboro, Massachusetts in 1815. Boyden developed many improvements to the leather manufacturing process (most notably patent leather), resulting in Newark producing nearly 90% of the nation’s leather by 1870.

Ironically, Boyden never patented his patent leather process.
