Lincoln, Nebraska was originally named Lancaster but was renamed in honor of Abraham Lincoln after he was assassinated.

There is some speculation that Lancaster was renamed in an effort to prevent it from becoming the state capital (as there was much local sympathy for the Confederacy); if this was truly the case, the plan backfired, and Lincoln remains the capital of Nebraska to this day.
