In 1839, state legislators in Jackson passed the Mississippi Married Women’s Property Law, providing women with the right to own and control their own property after marriage. Prior to the law, a woman was required to surrender all her property to her husband upon marriage, as was the custom under the existing legal doctrine of coverture.
Mississippi was the first state in the U.S. to pass such a law.
