Prior to 1911, the securities industry in the United States was largely unregulated. Kansas was the first state to enact legislation regulating the sale of investments, an action that inspired a number of other states to follow suit. While the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission made the "wild west" era of the securities industry a thing of the past, Kansas retains its independent security commissioner’s office to this day.
