Prolific bank robber John Dillinger was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1903. His activities eventually led to the creation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation by J. Edgar Hoover.

Dillinger was shot and killed by federal agents as he left a showing of “Manhattan Melodrama” at the Biograph Theater, an event subsequently used by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to market the movie (much to star Myrna Loy’s distaste).
