What is now Idaho Falls started out as Taylor’s Crossing, a wooden toll bridge built over the Snake River as part of the Montana Trail. By 1866, the town was known as Eagle Rock, named after a basalt island in the Snake River.

Finally, in 1891, the town changed its name to Idaho Falls, although it was only later that a hydroelectric project converted the rapids below the bridge into falls.
