In 1905, after former Idaho governor Frank Steunenberg was assassinated, Pinkerton agent James McParland accused William “Big Bill” Haywood and two other labor leaders of ordering the killing. McParland had the three men kidnapped from Colorado to face trial in Boise.

Despite McParland’s legally dubious efforts, the defense team (which included American lawyer and ACLU member Clarence Darrow) won acquittal for their clients. Confessed killer Harry Orchard received a death sentence, later commuted to life in prison.
