Atlanta used to be known as Marthasville after the daughter of Georgia's Governor Wilson Lumpkin. In 1845, the name was changed to Atlanta, a feminine form of Atlantic, and was then incorporated into a city.

Atlanta was burned by General Sherman during the Civil War, who destroyed nearly 70% of the city in his March to the Sea.
