Palm Beach was first established as a US Army fort in 1838. It was the first permanent settlement in the area not built by Native Americans. The first civilian inhabitants of Palm Beach took care of the lighthouse there.
The “father of modern Florida,” Henry Flagler, dubbed Palm Beach a “Veritable Paradise” and built the first resort there in 1894. His resort located by the ocean became a world renowned destination and is still in operation, run by family descendants.
