If you are in Pompano Beach, you may not realize it started in 1908 as a little town in Dade County. The name Pompano, according to some sources, came from a surveyor who named it after the fish he dined on while working in the area. Back then, the town had 250 residents, but now the population is well over 100,000.

Early settlers were drawn to its rich soil that created one of the first cash crops, pineapples. Later on, tomatoes became the moneymaking farm product. Incorporation of Pompano Beach began when settlers became interested in passing ordinances on issues like sanitation and panhandling.
