If you want to know about Orlando, it began when the US established Fort Gatlin to protect settlers from Indians. As for where the name Orlando originated, it has 4 stories around it to try to explain. One story is that Judge James Speer named Orlando after a character in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”

The most often told story is of Sentinel Orlando Reeves during the Seminole Wars, whose company of soldiers set up camp in the area after fighting Indians into the swamps of what is now Lake Cherokee.

Legends say that as he guarded their encampment, he saw an Indian disguised as a log floating toward him. He fired his gun, Indians killed Orlando with their arrows in an ambush. The Indians were chased back again, and Orlando Reeves is said to be buried in the area that is now his namesake.
