After Miami was incorporated as a city in 1896, a major construction project made Miami a tourist destination. The opening of the Royal Palm Hotel, a resort for the Gilded Age, brought families such as Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Vanderbilts to Miami.

Miami experienced some setbacks in its first years with a fire roaring through its business district. During the Spanish-American War, temporarily stationed troops threatened the community members with violence, and the next year a yellow fever epidemic ravaged the city. Rising above these tragic events, Miami quickly grew to be a major city of Florida.
