Van Nuys is called “the town that was started right.” The city of Van Nuys has historic roots, as Spanish settlers created the Mission San Fernando Rey in a place where generations of Native Americans lived.
After a history of settlements that grew around expanding railroads, an assemblage of bankers, developers, and other interests invested in a land rush. With planning and strategy by these well connected people, a town rose up almost immediately in San Fernando Valley.
Isaac Newton Van Nuys was instrumental in growing the town. As heir to a nearly 48,000 acre ranch, he molded it into a successful wheat growing venture.
