The original native inhabitants of Mesa were the Hohokam Indians, who built one of the largest series of canals in prehistoric North America. Beginning in 600 C.E., the Hohokam dug over 500 miles of canals in order to irrigate and sustain crops in the middle of the desert.

Although the Hohokam mysteriously vanished around 500 years ago, the rediscovery of their canals was instrumental to the US settlement of this region in the nineteenth century.

To this day these canals are used to irrigate this desert region.
