Now the second largest city in Alaska, Fairbanks was originally founded as a gold rush town. Even though the gold rush ended one hundred years ago, gold is still mined in the area. In fact, the country's biggest gold mine, Fort Knox Gold Mine, is located near the city. Since opening in 1996, Fort Knox has poured 5 million ounces of gold and is Alaska's largest open-pit gold mine .

Known as the “Golden Heart City” for the warmth of the people there, Fairbanks is home to the Alaska Highway, the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, and the University of Alaska.
