Content Coordinator

Are you interested in web marketing? Is writing one of your core skills? Avvo is looking for a content coordinator to join our content strategy team. You will generate content, help us manage our editorial calendar and balance search engine optimization (SEO), business, and user needs in order to build the Avvo brand and encourage conversion. Having some understanding of user experience and on-site SEO practices would be great, but is not as important as aptitude, attitude, and potential in the core disciplines of marketing, writing, and web technologies.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE that in addition to your resume, we’d like you to submit a demonstration of your writing skills using the following prompt. We’ve put together a few guidelines that are similar to those we use everyday. Please submit your article at the same time as your resume.

Topic: How to make your favorite coffee/tea

Audience: Someone looking for a new kind of coffee/tea

Key points to cover: What is your favorite coffee/tea, how to choose, how to make it, pros/cons of this approach. Length: 300 words.

Voice and tone guidelines:

  • Honest: Sensitive but not sappy, responsive but not alarmist.
  • Direct: To the point. Strive for clarity and directness by not adding complexity or unnecessary commentary (i.e. fluff).
  • Confident: Professional but not formal. Never sarcastic. Speak with authority, but be open to other opinions.
  • Accessible: Conversational but not intimate. Use plain language, but don’t erase technical language completely or talk down--we educate instead.

Job Responsibilities:

You’ll contribute to the production and optimization of content on Avvo.com. Every project is different, but this typically includes things like:

  • Conducting keyword research
  • Writing original copy and editing content to match the brand voice, tone, and style of Avvo.
  • Day-to-day project management of outsourced writers and editors.
  • Implementing SEO, navigation and usability recommendations in content management systems.
  • Using analytics programs to show the benefits of SEO campaigns and interpret that data to help your team understand the impact of your work.

You’ll support the content strategy team to understand their business goals, contribute to their strategy, and communicate successes and challenges.

  • The content team meets regularly to offer guidance and critique to each other. As part of this expect to hear direct feedback about your work and demonstrate improvement in response.

Education is one of our core values. You’ll need passion to fill in the gaps in your digital content knowledge (with lots of help from us). As you hone your SEO expertise, we’ll expect you to be a source of that expertise for our content and product teams.

The workload of a content coordinator is pretty evenly split between collaborating with other team members and working on solo projects. A positive attitude is a must, as is being equally comfortable working as part of a team and driving hard on-your-own projects.

Job Requirements:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Data analysis and critical thinking ability: you should be able to look at a set of data, draw conclusions about it, and communicate those conclusions.
  • Solid understanding of marketing concepts and best practices.
  • Writing skills: fundamentals like grammar and spelling are a given but you will also need to be able to write persuasive marketing copy and communicate effectively via email.
  • Ease in communication: you don’t have to be a great public speaker but you should have good interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Juggle multiple projects, stakeholders, and deadlines with aplomb.
  • Aggressive and enthusiastic learning: learn fast, be proactive, and contribute enthusiastically.
  • Drive to meet deadlines, no matter what it takes, whether working independently or as part of a team.
  • Flexibility: the search marketing and content landscape moves fast–the right candidate will adapt well to change and respond quickly to feedback.
  • A good balance of a creative spirit and an analytical mind.

Education and/or Experience:

  • B.A in English, creative writing, journalism, marketing, or a related field
  • If you don’t have a marketing degree, you should have some experience with sales, marketing, advertising, or public relations.
  • No SEO experience necessary. We will train you to support projects and advance your skills until you can take ownership of your own campaigns.
  • Experience writing web content like blogs, long-form articles, and PR or marketing copy
  • Experience leading or managing many projects from beginning to end.
  • Be a citizen of the web. We spend most of our days online; you should have an enthusiasm for the internet and have already spent some time building a web presence.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If you hate spreadsheets or Microsoft Excel, this is definitely not the job for you.

Nice to Have/Bonus Points:

  • Front-end web development (HTML/CSS) experience.
  • WordPress or other content management systems experience.
  • Experience with tools like Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.
  • Experience with or understanding of SEO and internet marketing.
